16.  SANDAKAN DEATH MARCH RAFTING ADVENTURE

Sandakan Death March rafting AdventureFrom 1942-45, the Japanese incarcerated more than 2000 captured Australian and British military personnel in a prisoner of war camp just outside Sandakan. In January 1945, orders were received to move about 1000 of the prisoners into the interior, following a rough track through swamps and jungle and across rugged mountain ranges. These forced treks, which claimed many lives, are now known as the Sandakan Death Marches. The final destination, for those who survived the 240-kilometre trek, was Ranau. While most visitors with an interest in wartime history now know that prisoners were held at a campsite near Ranau town, few are aware that there were two other campsites in the vicinity, known as Jungle Camps.

In 2005 Tham Yau Kong, of TYK Adventure Tours, working in close collaboration with Australian historian Lynette Silver, author of 'Sandakan - A Conspiracy of Silence', identified the original route taken by the POWs. The following year they began escorting adventurers across this long-lost track. As an extension of this initiative (www.sandakan-deathmarch.com) TYK now offers trekkers and other travellers the opportunity to travel by raft downstream from the final jungle camp site at Ranau, to various key places along the very last section of the death march track, part of which followed the Liwagu River.

TYK has also packaged a one-night, two-day Sandakan Death March Rafting Tour from Kota Kinabalu, with overnight accommodation at Ranau, situated on the slopes of the stunningly beautiful Mt Kinabalu.

The Sandakan Death March Rafting Adventure begins with an inspection of the the camp site, followed by refreshments. For the next five hours, the rafts float down the Liwagu River on a 50-km journey to Matupang, passing through scenic primary forest. This river is classified as grade 1 rapids, making it suitable for people of all ages. Those who prefer a shorter journey have the option of terminating their adventure at Nabutan, about four hours downstream from the starting point.

If you want to try something a little different, far away from the normal tourist routes, come with us on a Sandakan Death March Rafting Adventure, along the beautiful Liwagu Valley.

Sandakan Track Extension Tour

One day/one night

This itinerary is offered as a day-trip extension, with overnight stay at Kundasang, for trekkers who have just completed walking the Sandakan Track. (www.sandakan-deathmarch.com)

On arrival at Matupang, enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay. 17.  KULANGAS HOTSPRING ADVENTURE & SURVIVAL

Kulangas Hotspring Adventure & Survival (KHAS)Poring Hot Springs, to the north of Ranau, is a well-known destination for tourists and locals alike but few people are aware of another hot spring to the south of the town, located in the Liwagu River valley, and accessible only by raft. After an exhilarating ride downstream, a walk of about ten minutes from the river bank through primary forest takes the adventurer to a beautiful waterfall, and the hot spring. It is indeed a "Sabah wonder"!!

According to Mr Jamirin Kulangas, of RUGADING VILLAGE, the hot spring was discovered by his father, KULANGAS, in 1930, and his family has looked after it ever since. Mr Jamirin, a jungle survival expert, has now built a small bamboo cabin, called LAYUNG CAMP SITE, in the midst of the primary forest beside the river, so that he can share his knowledge and skill with adventurers wishing to visit the hot spring and waterfall.

To honour the Kulangas family's efforts in protecting this unique site for over 70 years, and for making it available for local tourism development, TYK ADVENTURE TOURS has named it KULANGAS HOTSPRING, and is proud to offer a two-day/1 night, or 3-day/two-night, adventure tour package - KULANGAS HOTSPRING ADVENTURE & SURVIVAL (KHAS). This expedition is exclusive to TYK Adventure Tours.

The adventure begins with two-hours of white-water rafting down the Liwagu to LAYUNG Bamboo Cabin, followed by a short trek through the jungle to the hot spring and waterfall. An overnight stay in the cabin provides a wonderful opportunity to learn some jungle survival skills, first hand, from JAMIRIN KULANGAS. The next day, a further three to four hours rafting through the steeply sided Liwagu Valley takes you to the exit point.

ITINERARY

Day 01:
Morning departure from Kota Kinabalu, passing through the maginifcent scenery to Mt Kinabalu, South-East Asia's highest mouintain, and then to Ranau. From Ranau, proceed by vehicle to the starting point, on the upper reaches of the Liwagu River. After white-water rafting for about two hours, check into the jungle bamboo cabin at the LAYUNG campsite, before trekking to the KULANGAS HOT SPRING and waterfall. Return to the LAYUNG campsite to learn jungle survival skills, with special emphasis on preparing jungle meals.

Day 02:
After an early jungle breakfast, proceed down the Liwagu River, white-water rafting to the exit point, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. From here, proceed back to Kota Kinabalu OR stay overnight at SLAGON HOMESTAY, the perfect base for exploring more of the beautiful Ranau/Mt Kinabalu area.

18.  RUGADING ADVENTURE TOUR

RUGADING ADVENTURE TOURAbout a decade ago; an earthquake happened around South East Asia region that a felt of "tremor" was reported near Mt Kinabalu and then there was a crack on the ground of about two inches found by villagers in the village of Rugading. Today, the crack was filled up as normal but not many know that there was a hotspring in Rugading Village which was found in the 1930s by villager called Kulangas nearby his farmland along the Liwagu River.

Today, the son of Kulangas; Jamirin Kulangas who had worked so hard over the years to try to develop Rudaging Village as a new destination of adventure tourism. Jamirin Kulangas was introduced to us on 6th March 2008 when we were doing the Sandakan Death March Rafting Adventure in Liwagu River with Dr Othman; the owner of Slagon Homestay in Ranau. He had shown us the hotspring and waterfall that he had looked after for several years. I described the path entering into the site of the hotspring and waterfall from the Liwagu River like a mystery mini GULLY. It's so unique and indeed was a great wonder especially seeing the hotspring emerging from the rockwall near the waterfall. Lagendary said that this site was guarded by two jungle spirits and therefore whoever coming to visit both these hotspring and waterfall must show their respect. According to Jamirin Kulangas whom his mother was a "Bobolian"; she used to come to this site always in the old days to perform rituals to heal the sick villagers!!

Also, along the Liwagu River near these hotspring and waterfall; there was a rock structure looked like a native boat of the old day called "Padawu Ngabai". According to lagendary, this was a native boat which was cursed and turned into rock.

On 18th March 2008; we had a visit to Rugading Village with Jamirin Kulangas who was also a community leader of the village. We had walked through the hills farmland to the hotspring and waterfall and discovered it's indeed a great tourism potential to be developed in Ranau.

An adventure tour was then created and it's called RUGADING ADVENTURE TOUR by TYK Adventure Tours. It's a combination of mountain biking, trekking and jungle stay in Rugading. Visitors can also come to Rugading Village for homestay then visiting the hotspring and waterfall. With a hope that there will be more visitors coming to visite Rugading Village; the mother natures can be further protected and primary forest will not be removed as it's the main source of water catchment. Tourism can indeed achieve a greater conservation.

ITINERARY

Day 01:
You will be arriving Ranau in the morning. A ten kilometer mountain biking through the scenic countryside to the Rugading Village. Meeting host Mr Jamirin Kulangas and a light refreshment is served. The a trekking through hills farmlands to Rugading waterfall and hotspring for discovery. Later trek to Layung forestry hut to stay a night where you will learn a bit of jungle survival.

Day 02:
After breakfest, you will need to cross Liwagu River, then trek across hills and jungle to Gaur Village and further proceed to Kenipir Village where there's a site of the Prisoners of War; another new tourism potential to be developed
